FSP's FSP550-60 PLN is a very basic looking supply that, despite adhering to most of the ATX 2.0 spec, doesn't have any SATA connectors which it supposedly should. It passed testing without a fuss, although it became very hot during the full load test and was impossible to physically pick up for a couple of minutes afterwards until it cooled down. Efficiency was as expected. Connectivity isn't the best for a supply with such output, with no EATX or separate P4+ and no SATA or PEG. While it passed the load test, the heat it gave out while doing so was a large cause for concern. FSP concede that the unit wasn't designed for such a sustained period of load, but were happy it appeared to be holding up.

Again, 550W of true output power is way more than should be needed and the unit's generous allocation for current draw from +12V is good to see. Barring the heat issue, it was a solid if uninspiring supply, not offering the connectivity options that a high-end PC might really require. Low cost counts in its favour in that respect.

Recommended system: Mid-range to high-end desktop systems based around P4 (including high-speed Prescott), AMD Athlon Socket A and AMD Athlon 64 and Sempron on Socket 754 and Socket 939, provided EATX isn't a strict mainboard requirement.

Akasa's PowerPlus 550W was a standout supply. From the nearly perfect voltage readings under high load, higher-than-average efficiency, generous allocation for current on +12V, all the way to the cool running from a 120mm fan and a very attractive finish to the outside of the chassis, it barely put a foot wrong. Dual PEG connectors for SLI and Crossfire are provided and you get plenty SATA and 4-pin to boot. Great stuff.

Recommended system: Mid-range to high-end desktop systems based around P4 (including high-speed Prescott), AMD Athlon Socket A and AMD Athlon 64 and Sempron on Socket 754 and Socket 939.
