Pigs Can Fly

Anyone who owns a PC will be familiar with Intel.Their PC processors have had a firm grip over other chipmakers for the last decade. However Sony's semiconductor chief, Kenshi Manabe has told financial analysts that he expects the next gen cell processor to become the industry standard. According to several attendees at a meeting, he said "The Cell chip is as good as the Pentium, if not better". The chip may be used for all kinds of multimedia consumer electronics.

According to market research Sony are set to sell 12 million PS3s in the first year and 200 million PS3s in the first 5 years. According to reaction to this news many people consider these figures to be laughable.

"The Pentium chip is unique in its stature, and I don't ever expect its success to be repeated," said Tom Starnes, an analyst at market-watcher Gartner.

Is this just hype by Sony, or can they really compete with the dominance of Intel?

I think Sony have big plans for the Cell CPU, IBM have already stated that they will use it in some of their servers. Sony's own range of PC's will probably be converted to Cell chips as well, it makes sense, seeing as they currently use Intel. Toshiba have also invested in the Cells design and production so thats another company who will be using it.

I believe that Sony will have different versions of the CPU to put into different devices like TV's. DVD players etc so yes Sony can take on Intel, but there's no way to know how good the CPU really is until we start seeing PS3's, PC's on the high street.
Nice. Wonder if they OC any good :p
Hmmmm, easy to misquote something like that IMHO..
There are lots of chips out there that are better than Pentiums, but it depends what for, you could say that the CL-SH7656 is better than a Pentium, yes it might be for the job it does, its like saying a Ferarri is better than a Land Rover, erm, well not if your a farmer and wanna drive across that field over there…..

I can tell you that you are wrong :)

Sony are in dream land : read PS2 CPU - was supposed to be the same….

They won't change their PC's to Cell under any circumstances, its not a standard architecture….
