With two of Intel's new 45 nanometre Quad-Core Xeon processors running at up to 3.2GHz, it's no surprise that this new Mac Pro is claimed by Apple as the fastest yet. It's quite a beast - eight processor cores as standard, powerful graphics options and up to 4TiB of internal storage.

In its standard configuration, the eight-core Mac Pro is available now for £1,749 inc VAT ($2,799 in the USA) and includes:

  • Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with dual-independent 1600MHz front-side buses
  • 2GiB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM memory, expandable up to 32GiB
  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT PCIe graphics card with 256MiB of GDDR3 memory
  • 320GiB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive running at 7200rpm
  • 16x DVD rewriter (aka SuperDrive) with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Two PCI Express 2.0 slots and two PCI Express slots
  • Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
  • Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse

New Mac Pro

Commenting, Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing said, "With 3.2GHz, eight-core Xeon processing; a 1600MHz front-side bus and 800MHz memory, the new Mac Pro uses the fastest Intel Xeon architecture on the market."

Expandability is available in abundance, too. Apple offers an alternative NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MiB of video memory, or an NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GiB of video memory. Furthermore, you could throw in four graphics cards and power up to eight 30in displays at once. You know you want to.

Not resting there, Apple has also launched its new Xserve. As you'll have guessed, this is said to be, "the most powerful Apple server ever". We can now only wonder what good stuff Steve Jobs and co have in store for Macworld next week. Most powerful iPod anyone?

Don't they mean the fastest mac that Intel have ever made? :p
Well I think its good their doing this, because i was under the impression computers actually got slower. I thought someone who worked at IBM had something called Less's law, which dictates that every 18 months the Apple mac double in price, but performs twice as well?

I guess his law is now left only to apply to Operating Systems ;)

eight, methinks.
So expensive!

Thanks - sorted!
