Final thoughts and rating
Acer has now released three laptops based on Intel's nascent CULV platform. Shipping with 13.3in, 14in, and 15.6in screen sizes, the Timeline series takes in either the single-core SU3500 or dual-core SU9400 chips sat on top of a GS45 motherboard, complete with a choice of integrated X4500MHD graphics or a Mobility Radeon HD 4330 card for better on-the-go gaming.We've looked at the 15.6in 5810T model outfitted with the faster processor - SU9400 - and whilst the drab, boring appearance is nothing to shout about, the sleek form-factor - just over one-inch thick at most - and relatively light weight are impressive for a laptop featuring a full-sized keyboard, including number-pad.
Performance, too, is acceptable for all but the most intensive applications, and the multimedia performance is strong. The biggest draw of the sample ~£650 Timeline is the excellent battery life, lasting well over six hours - almost a working day - when browsing the 'net and comfortably over four hours when playing full-screen video.
Ultimately, there's no amazing new technology here; you can purchase a 15.6in laptop with similar performance and battery credentials for, say, £500, powered by full-fat Core 2 and a larger-capacity battery, but that would intimate losing out on the sleekness and portability - two of the key selling points here.
We reckon the Timeline series makes more sense in the 13.3in and 14in versions, which further reduce weight and increase battery life. However, if you're on the lookout for a large-screen notebook with excellent on-the-go longevity and low-ish weight, the Acer Timeline 5810T, starting at around £580, is a pretty good bet.
