Alienware isn't one to shy away from adding the latest-and-greatest hardware to its ultra high-end desktop systems, and it now offers AMD Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards as an optional upgrade.

The Radeon HD 4870 X2, launched yesterday, is the world's fastest consumer graphics card, and is available to Alienware's US customers in its Aurora, Area-51 and Area-51 ALX desktops.

Alienware's high-end Aurora system offers AMD's flagship graphics card as a $550 upgrade from the standard 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.

The ultra-high-end Area-51 and Area-51 ALX systems also offer the option of dual Radeon HD 4870 X2s configured in CrossFire. The cost of such graphics power? An extra $1,100, and, another $350 for the required 1,200 Watt power supply, we might add.

The complete-system prices are somewhat jaw-dropping, but if you really want a machine that says "'ave it!" to all your mates, this could be it.

For added bragging rights, Alienware has provided a selection of all-conquering benchmarks on its official product page.

they would have to pay me to have a case like that. Completely vulgar.

I don't understand how they can get away with using such immense premiums with their computers.

I have to agree that the price premiums are extremely high for what you get, fantastic systems though.

I'm building my new computer atm and spent some time on their website building the system and changing some of the components and found that I could have the old component and new one (I changed/upgraded) for less if I went out and bought them myself.

Its a shame because I bought a laptop a few years ago from Alienware that's still going and lasted me well over the years.
Talking of alienware laptops, a mate of mine bought one and has had nothing but problems since he bought it. DVD drive, battery, windows license, keyboard… if the customer service had been quite good and helpful i dont think he would mind so much but it wasnt and instead of sending the laptop off for repair they sent him the parts and instructed him on how to fix himself.
