Research in Motion (RIM) is hot on the heels of hackers who lay claim to jailbreaking the Blackberry PlayBook tablet computer by gaining root access to the operating system.

A YouTube video posted by three hackers shows a demonstration of the unlocked PlayBook accessing services including Hulu, which isn’t currently authorised to users of the tablet.

The PlayBook is based on the BlackBerry Tablet OS, an operating system based on QNX Neutrino and the security breach was carried out with a DingleBerry tool, which the hackers plan to make available so other users can jailbreak the PlayBook.

RIM will no doubt be very embarrassed about the bypassing of PlayBook's security. The Blackberry device was thought to be extremely secure after becoming the first tablet to receive FIPS 140-2 certification, which makes it eligible for use by US federal government agencies.

RIM says it will work immediately on an update to help curb the impact of the jailbreak, but it’s going to be interesting to see what action it takes, if any, against the hackers, who can no doubt be tracked easily enough via their YouTube usernames.

"RIM will develop and release a software update to minimize adverse impact to our customers," the company said in a statement.
