Twitter triumph?

Twitter has finally revealed its first official app for the iPad after teasing it a few months ago.

Twitter for iPad makes use of the iPad's touch interface, letting users move information around without needing to open windows or click buttons.

It caters for people who are increasingly sharing or viewing different types of information on the micro blogging site such as "web pages, photos videos, hashtags, people check-ins and more," according to its blog.

Tapping on a tweet opens a new ‘pane' on the iPad, displaying another tweet, news story, photo or video. The blog said: "You can continue tapping on tweets, opening new panes, and getting new content as long as you'd like to. And, it's really easy to move between panes by swiping to the right or left."

If a user taps on a video link or opens a web page with an embedded video, they can play the content inline, while panes in the app allow users to look through their timeline while a video is loading.

The app makes use of gestures, allowing users to swipe through content and pinch a video to watch it full screen. Tweeple can pinch a tweet to view the author's details plus reply or retweet. Users can also "put two fingers together and pull down on a tweet to peek at the replies, showing the entire conversation leading to that tweet," according to the blog.

iPad owners do not have to have their own Twitter account to access content as the site has selected popular accounts in a variety of categories to keep newbies interested and they can also search, view trends and find breaking news via the app without signing up.

Twitter recently launched a Tweet Button people can add to their websites to encourage interaction and last bolstered its Apple-compatible offering in June, revamping its iPhone app for the arrival of iOS 4.
