HEXUS.E3 Japanese website IT Media have interviewed SCEI president Ken Katuragi and asked him about the high price point of the PS3. Katuragi said, "Price setting is always a headache for us. No game machines are comparable to the PS3, which is neither a genuine game console, home electronics [product] nor a personal computer. It is a new kind of product. [It will be] consumers who decide whether it's expensive or cheap. If a product offers charm, then buyers will be convinced."

Ken doesn't seem overly confident does he? Instead of launching into a speech about the capabilities and features of the PS3 and why it's worth $599 he appears to skirt around the issue.

The fact that you'll probably be able to buy three Wii's for the price of one PS3 doesn't help Sony, but the high price point has already put off a lot of gamers who would love to buy the console but simply can't afford it.

It is a new kind of product.
No mate, it's a games console. The same way the 360 is a games console. Calling them “media centres” is a huge stretch of the truth as neither have TV tuning capabilities, and they aren't PCs either by any stretch of the imagination.
