The tilt controller has a use!

HEXUS.E3 We took a bit of time out from our incredibly hectic schedule (anyone fancy 35 meetings in 3 days?) to get our hands on with the PS3 dev boxes running on the Sony booth. There was a pretty wide range of stuff going on, with a few games obviously designed with the PS3’s features in mind… so let’s have a brief run through of what we played and, of course, we’ll visit all these later in more detail…

First up is Madden NFL ‘07 which, as this shot shows, looks rather like any other Madden game… so let’s move swiftly on…

And speaking of swiftly, here’s Sonic, busting his moves so fast that my camera couldn’t keep up!

If something a little more sedate is your bag, then perhaps Virtua Tennis 3 is more for you? This was actually pretty fun to play, and will very likely give Top Spin 2 a run for it’s money.

Oriental slanted Genji 2 follows on from Genji with more combat and fighting action based around your warrior living in ancient Japan. It’s got loads of fighting, big shiny swords and more slicing and dicing action than Kill Bill… And let me apologise for the frankly boring photo, but you try and shoot and play at the same time!

It’s got Formula One cars in it and it’s the 2006 season, ok? Oh, you want more? Ok, well we can’t comment on the teams and drivers right now as we just got on a raced… and that bit wasn’t there to see anyway, but the PS3 controller lent itself well to F1 ’06 with the option to use the tilt for steering. Also, it was the first game we’d played that made use of the PS3 controller’s ‘trigger type’ R1 and R2 buttons. These have had a redesign, so now they’re more like the Xbox 360’s trigger buttons, though both R2 and L2 remain the same.

Staying with racing games for a moment, here’s the most successful racing franchise ever on Sony consoles. Yes, it’s Gran Tourismo and yes, it’s running in HD 1920x1080p. Whilst playing I set a fastest lap time that wasn’t beaten by anyone else… until I let someone else have a go… The game itself looks, feels and plays just like the other GT games but it has to be said that the graphics were pretty darn good even if the HD element wasn’t all that exciting.

Check back soon for more on the PS3 games on show.
