PS3 News

Sony CEO Howard Stringer yesterday gave the public a brief glimpse of the company’s upcoming Playstation 3 game system at the Consumer Electronics Show, though did not say when the successor to Playstation 2 would be available. Instead he mentioned the statistics of the Playstation 2, perhaps in a bid to push the console and sustain its momentum.

He told us information that was already in the public domain, such as the PS3 supporting the Blu-ray Disc format and backwards compatibility with earlier Playstations.

Stringer showed an exteremely short demo of the graphical capabilities of the system, Sony's own Formula 1 title, the dragon related Lair project by Factor 5, and a a plane shoot em up. He then told us that 4,000 PS3 development kits have been distributed across the globe.

Some websites who are attending the event have heard Sony officials still talking about a Spring release.

The transcript of the speech will be available in full shortly.
