Following the news of a PS2 price cut earlier this week, a number of analysts believed that it would be followed by an announcement of a PS3 price cut. Instead, according to GameZine, Sony has announced a bizarre PS3 bundle, which will roll out shortly in North America and will include a PSTWO slim for a RRP of $419.99, $20 more than the price of a PlayStation 3.

The deal will apparently be available in North America this summer, but currently it hasn't been confirmed whether it will hit Europe.

"Just as PlayStation 2 is delivering on a 10-year lifecycle and helped expand and solidify the DVD format for home entertainment along the way, we believe PlayStation 3 offers the same promise by helping secure the Blu-ray format and delivering unprecedented value as the total home entertainment solution for the next decade," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA.

"For this reason we will be selling both consoles in one exclusive package for only $419.99. This will allow buyers to enjoy the 1,900 titles available for the PlayStation 2, whilst also taking advantage of the PlayStation 3's growing library."

Wait a second though, there's a few April Fool's going around, and as we can't see any official source for the news we'd guess this is a joke, right?

It has to be a joke as it doesn't make sense….the PS3 plays PS2 titles and therefore does not need a PS2 bundled with it to use the back-catalogue :P
yeah I'm inclined to agree with shaithis, the PS3 is backwards compatible with PS1 & 2 games. However it is not 100% compatible because it is up to
“game publishers and peripheral manufacturers to develop the appropriate hardware to play peripheral-dedicated PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3”
lol would be interesting having both consoles :D
Check the original articles source :D
Could be taken as truth IMO

The 60gb PS3 had the emulation in, but IIRC it wasnt existing in the 80gb/40gb (possibly newer ones have it via software emu I'm not sure) so it kindof makes sense.

I was sure that the PS3 <> PS2 backwards support was dropped quite a while back.

The 60gig had software based emulation, with anything after it not having the option of playing PS2 games?
