SDK price cut

In a bid to encourage designers to create new games for the Playstation 3, Sony has cut the price of their software development kit by half.

Sony Corp.'s gaming unit, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said prices for the development package for the PlayStation 3 will be reduced to US$10,250 in North America, 950,000 yen (US$8,600; euro5,900) in Japan and euro7,500 (US$11,250) in Europe.

The SDK cut follows the reduction in price of the Playstation 3 console, which is reported to have doubled in sales since the change.

Sony claim that they have sold approximately 5.6 million PS3s worldwide as of the end of September and will be hoping to capitalise on Wii shortages over the Christmas period, but they'll have to see off stiff competition from Microsoft who will be unleashing a variety of tempting Xbox 360 bundles later this month.
