The PlayStation Network has been down for almost a week after Sony admitted hackers had compromised the personal information of PSN users.

Nick Caplin, Head of SCEE communication has assured users today that the platform holder intends to "proceed aggressively" in pursuit of the hackers that took down PSN over the Easter weekend.

"Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services," said Caplin in a new update on the EU PS Blog. "We don't have an exact date to share at this moment as to when we will have the services turned on, but are working day and night to ensure it is as quickly as possible," he added.

"We are currently working to send the following message via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of this malicious attack on our servers, so please look for this information via email as well," he said, repeating the same worrying message posted on the U.S. PS Blog earlier in the day.

"Please note that we are as upset as you are regarding this attack and are going to proceed aggressively to track down those that are responsible."

Patrick Seybold from Sony said today the firm aims to have PSN up and running "within a week".

MY details will have been sold by then though so it only really helps Sony.
Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't it this type of bullish behaviour that started it all with Geohot, they said they would “hunt him down” which resulted in Anonymous attacking them now they come out with the same thing with these attackers, I can't be the only one that see's this as another invitation and they will be hacked harder and larger than ever.

At the end of the day, like Jay states, this isn't here nor there in the eyes of the customers who have lost their data, Sony need to focus on actually fixing their faults before they go stirring it up again with more hackers. If it was that easy to bring down PSN and the rumours are true of the data being held in plain text and singular strings then it's not going to take long before we see this again.
Ninja assassins in a Chinese military IT base? Oh the drama! How exciting!
The thing is, Geohat actually had some reasonable point in what he was doing. If i'm right it was more about hacking the console itself for homebrew (and ultimately piracy), which is something that is respected and well supported within the internet community, an on 4chan etc.

Taking down PSN just to show that it's possible is also “respected” amongst the community, its something that I think it seen as “sticking it to sony” etc.

Stealing personal details and selling them on however, and even worse - CC details..that is frowned upon immensely and goes against the entire point of what “anonymous” have ever done.

So no, I don't think we'll see a backlash for the internet community on this in terms of another hack/takedown attempt, at least not yet. It's actually more likely imo that the criminals who have stolen and sold the details will be tracked down by “anonymous” and turned in.
A brief message to Sony: I don't care who did it
