Though Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has stated quite clearly that the lifespan of the PlayStation 3 will be approximately 10 years (ending in 2016,) Japanese website, PC Watch Impress, claims that the PlayStation 4 could arrive much earlier and that SCE is intent on creating a more developer-friendly cell architecture centred on a multi-core CPU.

PC Watch Impress (via Kotaku ) claims that it takes SCE approximately two years to manufacture new consoles, so the PS4 could even arrive by the end of 2012.

Intel's Larrabee GPGPU was initially rumoured to be included in the development of the PS4 alongside the Cell, but disappointing early performance figures caused Sony to back out of those plans claiming that it wanted "a bit more horsepower."

Sony has been adament that the PS3 will be around for some time, so it's likely that SCE is still just shopping around and making plans for the PS4.

Whatever the case, it seems more likely that we'll see the next generation of hardware spring up from Nintendo, who has already confirmed in 2008 that it is busy working on "Wii 2." Microsoft is likely to follow with a follow-up to the Xbox 360 which has already been around since 2005. It does seem likely, however, that we will see some new hardware appear on the scene in the next couple of years.

I wonder if they will even call it a PS4 as from memory I am sure the number 4 is supposed to be unlucky in Japan.
I'm fairly sure that as soon as the PS3 was out of the door the initial planning for the PS4 will have been started.

People appear to believe that the 10 year lifespan message means nothing will be released for 10 years, but that has never happened. Yes, it's almost certain that a PS-Next will arrive well before 10 years is up, but that doesn't mean that the PS3 lifespan is over, it just means that it won't be the lead development platform.

Just as happened with the PS2 when the PS3 launched, and the PSX/PSOne when the PS2 launched.

I expect we'll see the next Playstation arrive somewhere at the end of 2011 (I don't think they'll want the next xbox to steal as big a lead as it had this time around), I don't think it'll be called the PS4 either, but possibly something like PSFour, or another word. (4 is considered an unlucky number because it can be pronounced “shi” which is the word for death, but it might be okay as “four” if it's specifically meant as an English word..). PSIV? I dunno.

As long as it's not something overly fluffy (Reality Synthesizer, emotion engine, etc..) Playstation Omega anyone?
Stoo
Playstation Omega anyone?

Playstation Delta tbh
Stoo
PSX/PSOne when the PS2 launched.

Referring to the original ‘Playstation’ as the ‘PSX’ could be confusing due to the PSX being a PVR that includes a PS2/PS1 but was never released outside of Japan due to it's price point and consequently not selling many units. http://www.psx.sony.co.jp/

Which is a pity as it would have been quite good :(
Yeah, but the Playstation was originally referred to as the PSX for a lot longer than the PS2 based uhh, PSX..
