PRESS RELEASE

Philips introduces world’s first PC-free Skype-certified DECT phone at IFA 2006

IFA 2006, Berlin, Germany – Philips is to introduce the world’s first DECT phone for Skype™, that works even without a PC being switched on, to communicate via the Internet. The Philips VOIP841, is amongst the latest digital home communications products Philips is showcasing at IFA 2006.

Philips is continuing to drive innovation in digital home communication by providing a full range of handsets and devices that enable crystal clear voice calls via the Internet. These introductions include the Skype-certified VOIP841, which has been specifically designed for Skype users and distance callers wishing to take advantage of the cost savings available from Internet Telephony.

As the VOIP841 works independently, Skype users can benefit from total flexibility and call even when their PC is not connected.

The advanced design reflects the real innovation brought by this modern phone. Contacts are easy to see on the 65k full color, full graphic display, and calling them is straightforward with Skype & SkypeOut™. The enhanced speakerphone and outstanding voice clarity bring emotion back to phone calls. The phone will be available for Christmas 2006.

“There is enormous potential in the global market for VOIP handsets and Philips is committed to gaining a leadership position by providing an attractive and innovative product range. These latest introductions demonstrate how Philips is giving consumers maximum choice of how, when and where they make telephone calls and enjoy the cost savings and performance advantages that VOIP offers,” said Lucas Covers, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, Philips Consumer Electronics.

New VOIP handsets and headsets

Philips is also to launch the sleek VOIP080 handset, featuring a wired USB PC connection, free calls worldwide via Skype and excellent conversation quality with the convenience of a classic phone. The Philips USB phone for Skype, the VOIP080, also benefits from a unique roll-up cable management system enabling the USB cable to be wrapped around the phone, ensuring no more knots in the phone cable. The VOIP080 is the perfect Skype travel companion.

Universal hands-free multimedia headsets
In addition to these new handsets, Philips also announced the launch of a range of universal hands-free multimedia headsets designed specifically for Internet based entertainment including VOIP calling, gaming, music and video.

The SHM3100, SHM3300 and SHM6100 offer excellent sound quality at affordable prices and are perfect partners for any PC-based activities. They come highly recommended by Microsoft for use with the latest release of Windows Live Messenger™. Styles range from in-ear (SHM3100), neckband (SHM3300) and headband (SHM6100), allowing maximum comfort and flexibility.

Philips will also be showcasing two of its recently introduced breakthroughs in IP telephony, the Philips DECT phone for Window Live Messenger, VOIP433, and the Philips phone for Skype, VOIP321.

The VOIP433 offers both conventional landline phone calls as well as free or cheap calls over the Internet via Microsoft Windows Live™ Messenger, successor of the MSN® Messenger service. The VOIP433 is as easy to use as any conventional telephone, and features the unique ease-of-use benefit of enabling callers to instantly see which of their Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger contacts are online with a single press of the Messenger key.

The Philips VOIP321 phone combines total cordless mobility, ease-of-use and crystal clear DECT digital voice quality with the dual convenience of enabling consumers to make free Skype calls via a broadband Internet connection.

Finally

(that's a *lot* of skype calls before this thing pays for itself but better than never)

argh - better *late* than never
Well, take off, say, what, £35 cos that's about the cost of a DECT phone that you won't have to buy? Then you're looking at £100.

Okay, the equivalent of £100 of calls takes some doing but for the sheer convenience of being able to take and make Skype calls away from your desk and whether or not the PC's turned on, it's not a sum that hardened Skype users are necessary going to be turned off by.
hmm, philips sounds kinda cheap quality to me, especially as u want it connected to your computer.
sunnyg,

I'm sure you knew exactly what you meant to say - but I'm not sure you actually said it.

How come you think Philips sounds cheap quality?

Also, I haven't a clue why you think it needs to connect to your PC. It doesn't do that at all, it connects via its own wireless base station to your home router.

Might I refer you, perhaps, to the original IFA headline?
Well, no offense but I think that's false logic Bob, because I already own a DECT phone so buying this isn't going to save me £35 (or refund me £35). I guess if you got a skype in number and were happy to pay for all your skype out calls to non-skype connected friends & family, then you could save £31.50 per quarter in BT line rental, which is very attractive (and use mobiles as back up for when it don't work - and let's face it, it won't all the time) except that I need BT line rental for my ADSL subscription to work in the first place. The whole point of skype is that it's simple and cheap from the off. Until the user base is larger / has more handsets like these, it's not quite worth it. Amazingly, my entire non-tech family has skype - but I call them on landline/mobiles 90% of the time cos of one of us being offline/away from computer the rest of the time. It's like video mobile - until everyone has it, it's an expensive proposition for the rest of us (non-first time adopters).

i'm just bitter cos i really want to tech to work at prices that make sense and it's so close yet so far…
ok, I'll go and get a coffee and cheer up :)
