Virgin Media has introduced a range of "Travel Passes" that aim to offer better value for consumers using web-connected services throughout the European Union.
The company's Travel Passes, priced from £6 for all-day mobile internet access or £10 for mobile broadband access, provide a capped usage allowance that should ensure users aren't caught out by extensive overseas data charges.
For users wanting to access the Internet from their mobile phone, Virgin offers a one-hour travel pass with a data cap of 3MB priced at £4. Alternatively, a 24-hour travel price that provides up to 5MB of data is available priced at £6.
Mobile broadband users, meanwhile, can take advantage of one-, three-, seven- or 30-day passes priced at £10, £15, £30 or £60, respectively. Virgin calculates its mobile broadband travel pass data allowance on a pound-per-megabyte basis, meaning the one-day pass will provide a data allowance of 10MB.
In comparison, the company's standard mobile broadband tariff currently charges £5 per MB for data usage outside of the UK.
Jonathan Kini, director of mobile at Virgin Media claims the travel passes will ensure "customers never have to worry about accessing the internet while they’re abroad".
"Whether it’s searching for the best pizzeria in Rome on your mobile or uploading photos onto Facebook with a laptop and mobile broadband, customers now have control over what they spend on holiday," said Kini in a statement.
Virgin's travel passes apply to all EU member states and are available via SMS by texting BUY + pass name (1HR or 24HR for mobile internet, or 1DAY, 3DAY etc for mobile broadband) to the number 23456.
