Troubled handset manufacturer showing no signs of recovery

Motorola's mobile division is already in trouble and the company's three new handsets introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today have done little to demonstrate any possibility of recovery for the struggling handset manufacturer.

Motorola's lacklustre lineup

Pictured above are the Motorola Z6w, W161 and W181. The Z6w, which doesn't look all that bad, simply takes the Z6m and adds Wi-Fi connectivity.

The W161 and W181, are new additions to Motorola's robust, dependable and good value handsets. One of their key features is listed as "allow consumers to have clear conversations in noisy environments", that's how remarkable these phones are. They are going to be cheap however so we shouldn't expect a lot.

These handsets themselves aren't the problem mind you, we'd just come to expect more from Motorola. Sony Ericsson is revealing Windows Mobile devices, Nokia is crowning itself with its N96 and Samsung is packing two touch screens into single handsets these days. Motorola just isn't doing anything remotely interesting with its handsets.

The Z6w is scheduled for Q2 2008 and the W161 and W181 are expected in Q1 2008. No word on pricing just yet.

Nothing new there then, like most of there handsets? Wouldn't touch another one with a bargepole.
