When it comes to DAB radios, the name PURE usually springs to mind, and with good reason, too - we've already tested the UK outfit's ONE Classic and Evoke Flow products, finding both to be excellent.

However, on a day in which Hewlett Packard has attempted to reinvent the digital photo frame, PURE has decided to have a bash at reinventing the world of radio with what it calls "the world’s first high resolution DAB digital and internet-connected" solution, the PURE Sensia.

The device, pictured below, offers most of the high-end functionality expected from a PURE radio and adds a 5.7in colour touchscreen capable of a 640x480 resolution.

With the addition of the display, the PURE Sensia is able to offer a selection of new features - none more so than PURE's own set of custom apps. Initial apps include solutions for popular social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Picasa, as well as every-day apps for weather and news. PURE expects the number of apps to grow over time but at present it seems they'll all be produced internally.

Bringing those apps to life is built-in Wi-Fi, which also enables the Sensia to act as a media streamer that's compatible with the majority of networked devices. As you'd expect, it also supports thousands of available Internet radio stations, as well as podcasts, DAB/DAB+ and FM radio. Sadly, there's no support for video just yet.

Providing sound is a built-in 30W stereo speaker system equipped with PURE Clearsound technology, and there's audio out for those wanting to hook up an external speaker solution. Users will also find an input allowing for easy MP3 player connectivity, a built-in alarm, a countdown timer, sleep timer and a bundled RF remote that'll control the device from up to 10m. As with the web-enabled Flow range, the Sensia retains all of PURE's Lounge functionality.

Commenting on the launch of Sensia, PURE general manager Paul Smith had this to say:

"PURE made its name as the company behind the success of DAB. We’ve since created a market leading and multi award-winning, internet-connected product range with our Flow series. Sensia is the next major innovation from PURE, which I am confident will bring radio to a whole new ‘Facebook’ generation while still inspiring our traditional customer base. Radio will never be the same again."

Bold claims, but if you're looking for a top-of-the-line radio, PURE's Sensia will be landing in time for Christmas in Bright Red, Vivid Yellow, Sleek Black and Cool White finishes. PURE's suggested retail price is £249.99.

What's with the huge amount of black around the screen? The radio would look a lot nicer if it wasn't shaped like a rugby ball.
Is it a radio or is it an internet/multimedia hub? £250 for a radio is absurd!!!
Have to agree with Macbeth; with a price tag like that it will almost kill the idea of a radio being something more before it has even got off the ground.
Sadly, there's no support for video just yet.

well, just add video capability and a Freeview tuner, and it would make a great bedroom TV (it still would need to be cheaper though…)

Far cheaper, and although you need an internet connection for radio rather than DAB, it is a far more flexible device. I have one, they are awesome :)
