More than 350 customers migrate from Sun to HP in 2009
HP today announced it has partnered with Microsoft, Novell and Red Hat to provide customers with service offerings, incentives and training programs that streamline the migration from Sun to HP-based solutions, while reducing total cost of ownership.
In 12 months ending Oct. 31, 2009, more than 350 customers - about one customer per day - migrated from Sun systems to HP solutions. Many of these customers have taken advantage of the specialized services, support programs and financial incentives offered through the HP Complete Care program.
Working with industry-leading partners, HP has enhanced this program with new tools, expertise and operating environment solutions that offer customers migrating from Sun the peace of mind they need to focus on growing their businesses.
HP and partners provide flexibility
To simplify the migration process, HP offers proof-of-concept, initial assessments, application migration, implementation and total life cycle services. HP's partners provide additional services to ensure that customers' data center environments are fully supported. New HP Complete Care program benefits include:
- Improved ease of use with a 50 percent discount on SUSE Linux Enterprise Fundamentals on-demand training;
- Expanded access to migration expertise with up to 25 percent off Red Hat Global Training;
- Greater support with the Migration Competency Center in Grenoble, France, which provides assessment and proof-of-concept services for customers.
HP's partner relationships also empower customers to choose the operating system that best meets their needs to run on HP ProLiant, HP BladeSystem and HP Integrity server platforms. This includes HP's UNIX operating system HP-UX 11i, Microsoft Windows® Server, Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and even Sun Solaris.
HP-UX 11i delivers built-in business value
HP-UX 11i with HP Integrity servers provides better performance and reliability of mission-critical computing systems than IBM AIX and Sun Solaris.(1) Its centralized management significantly reduces system administration and maintenance. Integrated virtualization improves system utilization, while built-in security and failover clusters optimize availability of demanding workloads. HP recently secured the No. 2 position in UNIX revenue, according to IDC.(2)
When ICA Fluor, Mexico's largest construction company, and Fluor Corp., a U.S.-based Fortune 500 company, experienced rapid growth, the company needed to migrate from its Sun Fire server running Sun Solaris to HP Integrity running HP-UX11i.
"HP's support and technical expertise during the migration was critical - ensuring us a seamless transition that we anticipate will save us nearly $1 million in cumulative IT costs over three years," said Gregorio Pirez, IT manager, ICA Fluor.
HP and Microsoft maximize return on investment
HP's more than 23,000 Microsoft-trained professionals continuously work with Microsoft on design, engineering testing and support to provide customers a smooth transition to HP-based solutions.
Additionally, HP and Microsoft deliver reliable, flexible, standards-based platforms for application and database solutions. The new releases of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and upcoming release of SQL Server 2008 R2 deliver enhanced scalability, helping enable customers to easily consolidate workloads and reduce total cost of ownership.
HP and Novell reduce risk, improve uptime
HP and Novell provide customers a highly interoperable alternative to Sun Solaris with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, which runs on HP Integrity and HP ProLiant servers. ITIC recently reported that SUSE Linux Enterprise customers experience 51 percent less downtime than customers running Solaris on SPARC.(3)
HP and Red Hat improve performance, simplify migration
For more than a decade, HP and Red Hat have worked collaboratively to support innovation in server and open source technology. This relationship provides customers a broad range of business-critical and high-performance workloads and applications.
Red Hat solutions running on HP servers combine high availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning and automated provisioning into one command center, with the simplified management of a converged infrastructure. Customers can use HP and Red Hat's mutual migration services to benefit from standards-based open source, while managing risk and reducing costs.
