Conclusion

Jam-packed full of features and speed the Asus RT-AC87U is a viable option for any home or office wireless network that services high data volumes and multiple clients.

The Asus RT-AC87U has a retail price of Ā£185 here in the UK while stateside buyers can find the router for around $240. Without question the Asus RT-AC87U is one of the most expensive routers on the market, short of AC3200 offerings, but such a high price exists for a reason. This Asus router is so costly because it is at the cutting-edge of high-performance networking and thus it is a classic case of early adopters paying more to be at the forefront of technology.

If there was ever a convincing case for wireless networking being a capable substitute for a wired network this certainly is it. Home or small office users without a wired infrastructure or the capability to install one would do well to consider a high performance wireless option. The Asus RT-AC87U has the speed credentials to reach near-Gigabit levels but it also has the ability to serve numerous clients, with 2400 mbps of total bandwidth, and ensure a minimum standard of service with its advanced QoS feature.

Consumers will need capable receiving hardware to take full advantage of the Asus RT-AC87U - and those receivers aren't cheap, either - however, this is a case of "you get what you pay for." Jam-packed full of features and speed the Asus RT-AC87U is a viable option for any home or office wireless network that services high data volumes and multiple clients.

This kind of wireless router will be a must-have device in the near future as the price goes down.

So you don't use a tablet or a laptop at home?
Nope. There's a wireless router obviously, for others who bring devices. But I don't use a smartphone (got rid of it 2 years ago), and use desktop computers. One upstairs my main rig and another downstairs hooked up to 2 different TVs. The downstairs one has been the media player for the TVs, it was setup years before media boxes and I just stuck with it.
