Freecom launches world’s smallest 2.5in external hard drive

Freecom today announced its Mobile Drive XXS, and declared it to be both the smallest and lightest 2.5in external hard drive in the world.

The device, pictured below, is said to be 27 per cent smaller than its closest competitor and measures just 109.8mm x 79.5mm x 13.5mm. It'll cause less sagging for your pockets, too, weighing just 155g.

Despite its lightweight design, the drive is available in 160GiB, 250GiB and 320GiB capacities. It'll utilise USB 2.0, providing speeds of up to 480Mbit/s, and the drive is encased in a "form-fitting rubber sleeve for optimal grip."

It'll work with both Mac and PC, and the 160GiB, 250GiB and 320GiB models are priced at £44.99, £59.99 and £79.99, respectively.

i wonder when someone will sell external caddys the same size so you can stick any 2.5" notebook drive in. that's handy if you upgrade your internal drive and want to make your old drive a spare external

I have a sumvision caddy which i worked out to be only 3% bigger, cost me a whole £4!

so if they are the same size, what's the big deal about freecoms one? is it a winner by a millimetre or two or something?

Exactly.

I have a few of these 2.5" cases and they are all pretty compact, although, a few mm is quite a percentage decrease in thickness.

Most of the cheap cases the drive isn't tight to rattles about a little bit, the rubber sleave will prevent this. It will also give it an element of drop protection too.
