Sine of the times

OCZ acquired PC Power and Cooling in 2007 and now positions it as its high-end subsidiary for, well, PC power and cooling. Under the banner of this subsidiary, OCZ has launched its first ever uninterruptable power supply (UPS).

The Pro-Source 1500 UPS is targeted at high-end enthusiasts and mission-critical systems, is fully compatible with OCZ PSUs and claims to be "your ultimate source of back-up power".

The secret behind this claimed excellence is the fact that is provides a pure sine wave output rather than the shoddy square wave or ‘step' sine waves produced by lesser UPSs. These inferior sine waves can play havoc with PSU circuitry and lead to a rejection of the UPS as a power source. This would presumably defeat the object of having one somewhat.

"The Pro-Source protects your investment by delivering a pure sine wave output for uninterrupted power to even the most demanding pc configurations in the event of an extended power disruption," said Ryan Edwards, director of product management for OCZ group.

OCZ says the Pro-Source 1500 is retailing for under $300 in the States, but there's no word on pricing and availability in the UK.

It will probably cost £300-£350 in the UK too. :( If so, why buy one of these when you could get an equivalent APC Smart-UPS for a similar amount of money instead? I thought the point of these OCZ UPSs were they were meant to be much cheaper than the competition?

Really? APC lists their Smart-UPS 1500VA at £389.99.

And if it converts at the same rate as the other PC Power & Cooling products, it would come out at about £250.
