Intel's fifth-generation Centrino platform, previously code-named Montevina and now known as Centrino 2, has been delayed due to technical issues and certification problems.

The platform, originally scheduled to launch next week at COMPUTEX, will now begin to ship on July 14th, with widespread availability of Centrino 2-based systems expected in August.

Centrino 2 provides support for Penryn, Intel's 45nm Core 2 processors, and features GMA X4500 graphics technology with HDCP support as well as optional WiMAX.

The delays are said to be a result of certification issues with the Wi-Fi wireless standard and technical issues with the chipset itself.

Intel spokesperson, Elvin Ong, said:

"We are taking the extra days to address two issues that require us to re-screen our chipsets with integrated graphics, and attend to some terms-and-conditions mistakes while filing and testing our wireless antennas."

The delay might prove to be just a minor setback for Intel, but then, it could also pave the way for AMD to make waves with its forthcoming "Puma" mobile platform.

Either way, we're going to have to wait a bit longer for those bundled SSDs.
