It's almost no-longer a question of if solid-state drives (SSDs) will replace conventional hard drives, it's more so a question of when. Particularly in the notebook space, where SSDs are becoming widely available and highly sought-after due to their lack of moving parts and greatly reduced seek times.

According to reports, Intel is preparing to speed up the widespread adoption of SSDs by bundling its own SSD products with its forthcoming Centrino 2 mobile platform, previously code-named Montevina.

It has been suggested that Intel's SSD product line will be titled "Intel High Performance SSD" and will come bundled with Centrino 2 in two sizes; 2.5in and 1.8in. The drives are said to provide 80GiB of storage capacity, and SATA II connectivity.

Intel's Troy Winslow has recently stated that Intel's SSDs will surpass the read and write speeds of current solid-state products from the likes of Samsung. To the delight of all those wanting an SSD in their system, Winslow added that Intel's SSD offerings should see 50 per cent price drops in both 2009 and 2010.
