Above the radar

As had been telegraphed by the company itself, HTC launched two new WP7 handsets - running the new ‘Mango' version - at combination press and consumer events across Europe today. They take the form of the high-end Titan and mid-range Radar, both of which will be made available from October.

It has become the cliché when marketing cheaper smartphones to euphemise them as ideal for social networking - much in the way unattractive people are said to have a nice personality - and the Radar is no exception.

Of the two the Radar was the most extensively leaked, with the press-pack confirming the image doing the rounds last week was legit. It comes in silver/white and and gun-metal grey liveries and has a 3.8-inch screen. The only detail offered about the chip is that it's 1GHz. Given that it will be a Snapdragon, that probably identifies it as the MSM8x55, which HTC has been using in phones for a year.

The Titan is a beast of a phone - with a 4.7 inch screen - in the tradition of the Desire HD and HD7. The chip is only identified as 1.5GHz, with no mention of cores. Qualcomm's latest attempt to simplify the naming of its Snapdragon chips states the only ones which clock up to 1.5GHz are dual-core ones, meaning this is probably the MSM8x60. Strange that HTC decided not to mention it was dual-core in its marketing literature.

"The new HTC Titan and HTC Radar smartphones raise the bar with new advanced photography, multimedia and social capabilities that enable you to take full advantage of the latest Windows Phone innovations," said Jason Mackenzie, sales and marketing boss at HTC.

"With its large, cinematic display, the HTC Titan packs an amazing amount of power and innovation into a device that is unlike anything you've ever held before and the HTC Radar's aluminium uni-body, compact size and finish will capture people's attention."

4.7“ screen…… drooooooooooooool

Some may say too big - but bigger is better! My 4.3” on the desire HD is brilliant, I think I could fit another .4" in my pocket. ;-)
That Titan looks good, but I wonder why they didn't make it a qHD - maybe a restriction due to Windows Phone 7? Prob not though.
i like that titan i think that may replace my optimus 7 when my contract runs out in feb
