Acer has trumpeted its Iconia Smart handset, which it believes combines the capabilities of a tablet in a smartphone format.

The phone features a hefty 4.8 inch widescreen with a 21:9 aspect ratio and it is characterized by its stretch-out and slightly curved shape. The body is made of metal with wavy patterns and is super slim, measuring 64.5mm in width.

Accompanying the monster screen on the front of the handset are 4 keys and a 2MP camera for IP video calling, while the back boasts an 8MP camera with LED flash. Inside, the phone is powered by Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Acer said there the phone gives users the same web browsing experience as using a PC as sites do not have to be resized and adjusted thanks to the Iconia's large screen and 1024x480 resolution- there is no need to zoom in and out and from side to side.

The Android browser offers multi-touch, Java script optimization, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support and multiple page opening, while there is fast connectivity via HSDPA @ 14.4 and WiFi N for data connection.

Acer believes the Iconia is great for watching films on as the 21:9 screen gives an "engrossing cinema-like experience".

"What's more the LED edge-lit display uses the same technology as TV showing super bright and vivid images; to top it off, Dolby Mobile technology delivers vibrant, immersive sound. Not enough for you yet? Thanks to DLNA technology or the HDMI cable, you can connect it to your TV to view your content on an even bigger screen!" it said.

The firm also said gamers will benefit from the Snapdragon processor with a 6-axis motion sensing gyroscope and accelerometer accompanying the large screen.

The handset is due to UK shops on 1 May although pricing is yet to be confirmed.  Here is an image of the Acer Iconia Smart.

Now this I like!

Nice one Acer for pushing the boat out a little.
The length being increased should allow it to remain pocketable easily, though it looks slightly odd. But certainly interesting - although I'd hesitate to say it offers the same experience as PC browsing. Better than other phones, no doubt.
