Honeycomb extras

The launch of the Android Market website coincides with the unveiling of Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets at an event at Google HQ.

"Honeycomb has a completely redesigned user interface, with more interactive notifications and widgets, improved multi-tasking, and the latest and greatest Google Mobile services optimized for tablets," said Google.

Pre-release apps built for Honeycomb were apparently shown off from over 17 developers, including: CNN, Disney Mobile, The Economist, Fuze Box, Glu Mobile, TouchType and Zynga.

Google no doubt hopes its Honeycomb OS will help it muscle into the tablet space currently dominated by Apple, which commands around 90 percent of tablet sales.

The first Google tablet to use Honeycomb is believed to be Motorola's Xoom, but other Honeycomb models are expected to follow soon after Xoom's launch.

Here is a video of the event. Be warned, it's pretty long and meandering, but if you're really keen to know more about the platform that will go toe-to-toe with the Apple iPad for years to come, it's worth a watch.

Providing a website for installing apps is what appbrain has been doing for ages on Android but I glad they've done it as it one less argument for an iphone (itunes integration - I hate it myself).
