Of course, the Xperia Play would also be used as a phone as well as a games console and Engadget said it performed much better than Sony Ericsson's X10 handset. It is reportedly fairly snappy and boasts Gingerbread goodies. The Mediascape app has apparently split up into separate widgets including a music player, gallery browser and media shortcuts.

The site commented that the handset can ‘easily' handle 720p video clips and now has a home screen feature that allows all the widgets to fit onto a single screen with one pinch as well as other nifty ways to search through apps. Engadget only saw one new preloaded app- PlayStation Pocket, which it reported seems to be a tool to manage downloaded games.

All in all, it seems that upon first inspection Engadget is reasonably impressed with the handset but its cost as well as the price and availability of games will no doubt determine the demand for the Xperia Play and ultimately its success as a console/phone.

Here are some more images of the Xperia Play, courtesy of Engadget.

I think that should probably say "The Xperia Play is reportedly comfortable to hold and possibly slightly higher in build quality than the PSP Go."

Anyway that out of the way, the X10 owner in me is left wondering if maybe SE would have been better advised to have launched this instead of the X10, or maybe have come up with an add-on to allow X10/Arc to have this keypad combo as an accessory.

Whatever the merits, or otherwise (I'm thinking of SE's software support record), of the device itself I'm willing to bet that it won't be inexpensive!
Ngage all over again really - maybe more support I guess.

I can't battery life being that good either for playing games.
