Staggering sales
Google estimates it sells around 200,000 new Android-based phones every day, around the double the number sold just two months ago.
Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO told cnet news the increased sales of Android phones is boosting the company's revenue due to a hike in mobile search traffic.
He reportedly said around 100,000 Android phones were flying off the shelves around two months ago.
"It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but incredibly phenomenal in its growth rate. God knows how long that will continue," he added.
Shipments of Android-based phones have increased by over 850 percent as the growth of Google's operating system has outpaced market leader Nokia's Symbian and beaten Apple too, according to research.
While Android does not make Google money per se, Schmidt reportedly said the OS lets more people conduct lots of web searches, reaping financial rewards.
He reportedly said: "Trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of Android's activities and a whole bunch more. I should also say that we love the success of the iPhone because the iPhone also uses Google's search and we get a chunk of that revenue when people search on the iPhone."
Schmidt is said to be completely committed to Chrome OS, insisting the success of Android will not alter the company's dual OS business plan, as Chrome targets a different part of the market.
Chrome is designed to cater for netbooks and forthcoming bits of tech due out this year forgoing a hard drive in favour of cloud-based storage, a market which Schmidt believes is ‘large'.
