Rob banks, steal cars

The Godfather film defined a genre and, since 1972, all gangster films are judged by the award winning standards of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic. The Godfather was carefully crafted and painstakingly woven into a cinematic masterpiece.

It was only a matter of time before The Godfather was turned into a computer game. Many people frowned when they heard that EA had gained the licence, but have they succeeded? Or have they created another atrocious movie spin-off?

The game begins as you witness the murder of your Father, on his return home after a busy week working for Don Corleone. As a boy you have no power to unleash your revenge but, nine years later and still fuelled with hate, you’re taken under the wings of Luca Brasi, where you’ll have plenty of chances to unleash your anger. You’ll start your mission at the bottom of the gangster ladder where you’ll rise up the ranks by performing tasks.

Your first task will be to model your character. From a few shots of botox to enhance the cheek bones, to a complete face lift, all the standard customisable options are available.

From this point onwards you’ll be robbing banks, stealing cars, taking part in daylight shoot-outs, muscling in on illegal rackets, and extorting money from the city’s businessmen.

Firstly, let’s get the numerous comparisons with Grand Theft Auto out of the way. EA’s The Godfather is nothing like GTA, and shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath. It’s true that the Godfather is a mixture of driving, fighting and shooting, but it lacks the style, fluidity, addictiveness and superb gameplay of the GTA series.
