Sony's new motion-sensing controller arrives

It may have taken Microsoft and Sony a few years longer than Nintendo to wake up to the realisation that there’s a whole new market out there ready to embrace a different, more interactive gaming experience in the comfort of their living rooms, but both companies are now ready to step forward and show us what they've got with the launch of their respective motion-controllers this year. While Microsoft is poised to release its hands-free motion-sensing experience later this year, Sony has now launched PlayStation Move, the wand-like motion-sensing peripheral that offers true 1:1 precision.

How does it work?
The combination of the PS3 system and PlayStation Eye camera detects the precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space of the PlayStation Move motion controller, allowing users to play the game as if they themselves are within it.

Through its advanced motion sensors, including a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, it delivers an accuracy that Sony claims is unmatched.

Users can provide direct input through action buttons and an analog trigger, while receiving physical feedback from rumble functionality and visual feedback from the sphere’s ability to display a variety of different colours. Furthermore, PlayStation Eye camera can capture the player’s voice or image, enabling augmented reality experiences.

It's a piece of hardware that essentially does the same things that the Wii Mote does, but it adds further functionality and delivers precise accuracy. The result, hopefully, is a peripheral that delivers a unique and immersive gaming experience.
