Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Revelations is set to tie up the current storylines of Ezio and Altair and reveal much more about Desmond’s back-story. But with the developer spitting out games in the series at the same rate as Call Of Duty can we expect a quality outing year after year, and does this latest iteration stand out on its own merits, or is it nothing more than a glorified expansion to Brotherhood?

Well, judgement time has now arrived as the first batch of reviews have now gone live ahead of the game’s release on Friday.

This is what some of the critics have to say about Assassin's Creed Revelations so far:

Strategy Infomer - “With the release of Revelations, Ubisoft have finally turned their initial concept into a truly unmissable game. Pulling the narrative together alongside some vital gameplay additions, this is the best, most complete Assassin's Creed title to date” – 95%

Gametrailers - “The engine is a bit long in the tooth and some of the content isn't entirely worth exploring, but if you're looking for an unforgettable top shelf action/adventure, heed the creed”.- 88% 1UP - “While Revelations lacks that one supreme improvement or standout mechanic that defined AC2 and Brotherhood each, it's still a damn fine sendoff for Altair and Ezio”.- 83%

GamesTm - “Assassin's Creed Revelations, then, is a pick-and-mix of successes and failures. At its core, though, it's just as accomplished a game as Brotherhood before it. All that's required is to dig below the surface layer of frivolous pseudo-innovations to discover yet another classic Creed, and a top quality conclusion to an excellent story arc.” – 80%

Official Xbox Magazine - “Bulk can work to a game's disadvantage if there's nothing drastically new on offer, however, and Revelations' later stages are a bit of a slog. It's just as well this is Ezio's final hour, because enjoyable as the game undoubtedly is, the base mechanics were showing their age in Assassin's Creed 2. Recommended, then, providing you're not expecting a massive overhaul.”- 80%

Eurogamer - “Where Brotherhood enhanced the thrill of being Ezio Auditore, Revelations distracts from it. Ezio may look old, but it's the series itself that really shows its age.”- 70%

Note: these are comments about the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. No reviews for the PC version were live at the time of writing.

The HEXUS review of Assassin’s Creed Revelations will launch later this week.

Presumably when the reviewer has finished beavering away through it? :D

That said, I'm wondering whether to try playing Revelations (which arrived yesterday) before attempting Brotherhood (which I got a while ago, but haven't played yet).
I haven't played Revelations yet (Christmas possibly) but I would say that as it's a continuing story you should play Brotherhood before it, as this is the concluding part of the story.

Thanks, I'm sure that I saw something online that said Rev was a continuation of Bro - in which case, as you say, I'd better get that one lined up first.

Music on Rev is good though - I got the fancy pack with the separate soundtrack CD, still think I prefer the AC2 soundtrack though.
I think I better actually get a hold of these, think I saw the first 2 on offer somewhere very recently, looked decent enough when they were launched, always a sucker for seeing movies/games to their end!

I did AC2 before trying AC1 - which was a major mistake, there's so many graphical glitches (e.g. I got stuck in between walls on a couple of times, with AC2 I got stuck halfway in/out of a gondola once) in the earlier game that I found it extremely frustrating. I'd also suggest that the pacing in AC2 is far better than AC1. Oh, and if you're a fan of good story then I'd suggest that AC2 has the earlier outing comprehensively beat. I just never empathised with Altair, whereas in AC2 you see Ezio go from late teen braggart to something impressive and VERY dangerous. In addition there's a strong “supporting cast”.

As you can tell I'm a big fan of AC2! :D (So much so that I actually went out and bought the soundtrack for that - apart from the music used for the climbing quests, it's actually quite good. And then followed up with the novel.)

I just can't understand why I've left Brotherhood unplayed for so long - maybe slightly put off by the RTS element they introduced in that game.
