Back in June, Nintendo sought to put an end to Freeloader, the bootdisk that allows the user to play games from other regions on their Wii system, by releasing a firmware update that killed Datel’s import boot disk.

The update, however, was optional, so Freeloader owners who spotted the news online simply had to avoid updating their consoles to carry own playing their region-free games.

Nintendo isn't that stupid though! It has now confirmed that every game released after the 3.3 update will only work if you updated your Wii.

So, the choice is yours. 'Freeloaders' can either continue to play only the games that they've bought from other regions for the rest of their Wii-owning lives,or choose to update and be play only region-specific code.

Not much of a choice is there really?

There is another choice - wait for some other person to go one up against Nintendo region restrictions.
now thats just wrong, think nintendo have gone to far with this now. Its ok to release an update for killing the software but forcing people to not use any new games because of this is pathetic, surely nintendo cant do this as it would breach some sort of contract(i dont know lol). What happens to the small minority that doesnt have the internet? wow then they cant play new games because they cant update. I dont see why they are doing this anyways because people who buy it over america still pay for postage and import tax and so, how do they lose out? sales in Europe decrease? well they would increase in america so its even then.
Why is nintendo giving people an excuse to mod chip their Wii?
What if you don't have a WiFi network? There is no LAN on Wii, you'd have to pay for the LAN adapter (or a WiFi router). Either way, Nintendo is forcing those people to pay more money to play new games, which has to be a breach of something?

Edit: I followed the link but couldn't find anything relating to this story?
the update will be on all of their games disks as well so no need for the net. they have however overstepped the mark here and left me with a choice to either buy no new wii games or to get my console chipped so i can still play the imports.

thanks ninty! oh well at least i got brawl, galaxy and mario kart.
