Officially hacked

At a German hacker's convention, spectacularly called the 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress, an American guy has given a presentation on how they've hacked the Nintendo Wii giving full access to the hardware and allowing for the future running of native homebrew.

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. Using these keys, they were able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).

You can view the whole video over at You Tube. Close your eyes at the end of the presentation and the German guy sounds like he's straight out of an episode of Allo Allo.

THis is brilliant news IMO.

The wii has so much potential and I think a lot of the big companies are afraid to try things too out there. Wii ware is a good idea but still from what I`ve read its expensive so if there is a way that normal people can hack together games then it can only be good for the console as maybe some of the big companies will see what is possible with the hardware and make truly inovative games and not just mini game collections
Sounds more like a disaster to me. Limited software takeup wll be even less thanks to all of the copied software that these hacks are usually used for.
The thing you have to remember though is that the large part of the wii installed base are casual gamers. These people are not likely to find out about the hacks so wont be affected by it.

The people who will know about it maybe a lot will use it for nefarious gains but if it allows people to fully exploit the possivbilities of the control scheme then imo it can only be a good thing
Not quite sure I understand it, even after reading the linked article, but does this basically mean you can run stuff without any hardware mods?
Yeah.

They have cracked the encryption in place atm.
