Square Enix President, Yoichi Wada believes that Sony need to focus on a consistent marketing strategy if they hope to compete with Nintendo in Japan.

"Sony first unveiled the PS3 as a mighty home electronics product. Then, after some badgering from game companies, it shifted the position of the console closer to a game machine. (The future of the PS3) would be tough if its marketing strategy is not straightened up," he told reporters on Friday.

Wii outsold Sony's PS3 by 3 units to 1 in Japan in August, but recent reports suggest that the gap is now closing as more games are released on the PS3. Nintendo sold 245,653 units of the Wii in the four weeks ending August 26, compared with 81,541 units of PlayStation 3 sold by Sony, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said.

It's widely believed that Sony will cut the price of the 60GB PS3 model in Japan in a bid to attract more sales. According to official reports, the US price drop of the 60GB model in July caused a surge in sales at Amazon.com by 2800%.
