FIFA 14 has been crowned this year's UK Christmas number one video game in official figures from GfK Chart-Track. This proves that bookmakers don’t always know best - they favoured Call of Duty: Ghosts to claim the top spot, as we reported last month.

Although the Xmas charts have more or less been dominated by Call of Duty games in the past four years, with an exception of being briefly knocked off the top by Skyrim, EA claims the top prize this year as FIFA 14 becomes eighth UK number one for the FIFA football series, proving Paddy Power’s spokesperson’s comment: “FIFA and Assassin’s Creed are set to be blown away by Call of Duty for Christmas number one video game next week,” reported on MCVUK a couple of days ago, completely wrong. Interestingly the last FIFA Christmas No.1 was way back in 2008 with FIFA 09.

According to GfK Chart-Track, sales of FIFA 14 went up by 18 percent running-up to Christmas, out selling CoD by 17,000 copies as sales of CoD: Ghosts rose by only by 7 percent. However GfK's figures we are talking about here are calculated on all formats whilst Call of Duty tops the popular Xbox 360 sales chart.

In other chart action Assassin’s Creed 4 rose up from fifth place to number three, almost doubling its sales week-on-week as an effect of heavy price promotions on PS3 and Xbox 360 by retailers, leaving Battlefield 4 trailing at number four. GTA 5 also surprised us with increased sales of 94 per cent at number six in the chart; it must be on a lot of kids' letters to Santa.

Below is the complete top 10 UK all formats chart for Christmas week:

1 (2) FIFA 14 (PS2/Wii/360/PS3/XO/PS4/PC/PSP/3DS/PSV)
2 (1) Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360/PS3/Wii U/XO/PS4/PC)
3 (5) Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (360/PS3/Wii U/XO/PS4/PC)

I'm not surprised … its by far and away a better game :)
I'm afraid these are 2 games I'll never play. Don't like football games and can't see the point of paying £40 - £60 for some new maps.
Out of all games in that list. FIFA and COD are the two worst in my opinion. Okay, maybe Just Dance is worse…
I wonder if the copies that come bundled with a new console count.
Good thing it says week and not month really as they'd of shifted a heck of a lot of copies with the launch of the xbox one. I own it but dont want it and cant sell it as it was a digital download
On the bright side, at least there's some sense in the gaming market as “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is doing very well :)
