Bring the Expressionist PLUS speakers to life, and any disagreements with the design and layout are quickly dismissed.
The system provides a substantial amount of volume considering its size and the subwoofer is a pleasant surprise. There's plenty of bass on offer - so much so that you may find the best results are achieved with the subwoofer volume turned down to roughly 30 per cent, so as not to overwhelm the mid-range.
Voice, to this ear, comes across clear and well textured. Similarly, instrumentals appear well balanced and crisp without coming across as too soft. At very-high volume, we did notice occasional distortion, but the Expressionist PLUS is plenty loud for the average user before running into any such problems.
At its price point, it's hard to see the Expressionist PLUS as anything other than a well-rounded audio solution that sounds as good as it looks. Such is the sound quality that we feel the speakers may be wasted on many PCs - where the vagaries of sound cards and other hardware come into play. Plug the Expressionist PLUS into a decent source, and you'll be in for a pleasant surprise. On that note, we'd like to see Altec Lansing come up with a USB-based PC speaker solution, in order to negate the foibles of often-underwhelming PC sound cards.
As it stands, the Expressionist PLUS is by no means the best set of speakers we've ever seen, but it offers plenty of quality at a reasonable price. Buyers are unlikely to be left disappointed.
