Flickr and Picnik unite

In my estimation, Flickr is without doubt one of the best online photo management and sharing systems. What continues to impress me most about the service however is its ability to continue to add new features that its users find useful.

Latest on the list of new additions is the ability to edit photos stored in your Flickr library. By browsing to any of your images, you'll now see a new 'edit photo' icon which when clicked, does exactly what it says. Using Picnik's photo editing tools, you're given simple on-the-fly adjustments such as auto-fix, rotate, crop, resize, adjust exposure, alter colours, sharpen and remove red-eye. If you're wanting to get more creative, there are an arsenal of effects available too.

Speaking on the official Flickr blog, George Oates announced the new feature by stating "Picnik has been providing online photo editing for a while now. As soon as we saw it, we knew that there was huge potential for us to join together. Rather than Flickr diverting from our speciality to enter a realm we had no (particular) expertise in, the thought of a partnership seemed much more sensible." Good thinking George, good thinking.

As with other third party services, users need to initially allow Picnik to edit their photos and are instructed to do so via a simple pop up window. If it all gets too much for you, be sure to have a look at Flickr's pre-prepared Picnik FAQs.
