Don't expect Windows Mobile 7 to launch next month at Mobile World Congress, despite what you may have heard in the press and on the rumour mill.

So claim industry sources cited by DigiTimes, and we can't say we're entirely surprised. Instead, Microsoft will release WinMo 6.6, codenamed 'Maldives', they say, to improve the current release, 6.5.

During his Consumer Electronics Show keynote last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said almost nothing about Windows Mobile, commenting simply that "we will have a lot more to say about phones next month at Mobile World Congress".

That, coupled with statements from some vendors that WinMo 7 smartphones will be out this year, led many pundits to predict the new OS will debut sooner rather than later.

Past roadmaps placed WinMo 7's debut late in 2010, and nothing said so far by Ballmer or the vendors indicates Microsoft isn't working to that timetable, despite hopes from some quarters that a version of the OS better able to compete with the iPhone and Google's Android platform is imminent.

The DigiTimes report merely adds weight to the original timetable, and while we can see Microsoft talking about WinMo 7 at MWC, we're not entirely convinced it will be launched there.

There's no doubt that Microsoft does need to move quickly if it's not to lose any more market share to its rivals. But if it really was about to release such a key revamp, it would have done so on the watched-by-the-world stage at CES than the rather less spectacular and media-haunted MWC?

I hope so… very disappointed with 6.5.3 so far.
starting to be too late now, 7 should have come out when 6.5 did
7 should come out when it's done. Not sooner. Period.
:)
I thought the original rumour was that Blamer would show off WinMo 7 at MWC, not launch it? I don't think I even heard a MWC launch mentioned until this 6.6 stuff came up…

It seems quite obvious that 7 won't launch at MWC, but we might get to see it. It'll be v6.6 that'll launch then to tide vendors over for the summer.
I suspect that 6.6 will effectively be a “final” buld of 6.5.3, so the current “dev” tree that lots of us have been playing with that has the start menu/close button at the bottom, and probably with the new addtion of native capacative touch support.

Makes sense as it really does improve the finger friendlyness of WM by a long way, and is suitable to run on the vast majority of current and previous generation WM devices (HTC Touch or Diamond for example), wheras WM 7 will need slightly higher specifications to run smoothly.

What I keep hearing is that there will be more information on WM7 released at MWC, and I suspect it will be Q4 2010 before we see any production devices running it..more likely Q1 2011 in reality. Would place a bet that you'll be able to get your hands on it via XDA Dev towards the end of this year tho :)
