James Sherwood of The Register reports:

TomTom has rolled out a trio of satnavs that continuously adapt the directions they give you based on changing road conditions, ensuring you always get from A to B by the fastest route.

The TomTom Go x40 Live range consists of the Go 540, Go 740 and flagship Go 940. All three models rely on the firm’s IQ Routes technology, which is essentially a database of historical travel information recorded for every major road on every day of the week at five-minute intervals.

For example, if you’re travelling on the M25 at 5.30pm then the satnav knows that the route’s often congested at that time of day, and will therefore suggest a less car-clogged alternative.

TomTom’s HD Traffic service is also included, as is a safety alert database – including speed camera details - and information about fuel prices in the local area.

All three models have a 4.3in, 480x272 pixel display, but while the Go 540 and Go 740 only have 1GB and 2GB of on-board storage, respectively, the 940 has a meatier 4GB of memory.

TomTom’s Go x40 Live will cost from €350 (£282/$519), when the models leave the forecourt for UK roads later this year.

So what is the main difference between these and the x30 series with IQ routes and live traffic? More memory? I really need to replace my 510, the 730T looks and sounds great, but its just a stretch too far.
Stringent, had you considered the Nuvi 760t?
