Living the dream

The fibre broadband arms race escalated further today, with the announcement from Virgin Media the four locations have now gone live with its 100Mbps fibre broadband, as anticipated back in October.

This development comes amid a climate of intense competition with BT; not only for the broadband speed crown, but to champion the UK's aspirations to develop a world-class broadband infrastructure.

It's generally accepted that the most remote parts of the country won't get faster broadband without some degree of state intervention, as there is insufficient return on investment for the likes of BT and Virgin from the cost of extending their fibre networks to the sticks. It's generally assumed BT will be the recipient of this public largesse, but Virgin doesn't look ready to give up that fight yet.

It may be that consistently offering faster broadband than BT will not only win consumers and businesses away from the former state monopoly, but will also make it difficult for the government to favour BT as much as it's clearly inclined to do.

Here's the full Virgin 100Mbps roll-out schedule.

Are there actually any routers that support that level of packet switching?

Probably cisco provide some, but you are talking 4 figures plus.
It doesn't take that much CPU to home routing as long as you're not doing complex firewalling.
And as long as you don't have hundreds of clients at the other side of it either
Also packet size would be important and clients would have to be wired to get any benefit over the 50 (or even 20) packages.
I don't care how fast Virgin can go, unless they sort out their piss poor customer service & total lack of care ofr their customers I'm only going to stay with them for as long as I absolutely have to! Can't stand them, or BT!
