Faster than a speeding bullet
Virgin Media has expanded the reach of its fastest 100Mbit broadband offering, which is now available to over four million homes.
The roll-out is part of an on-going Virgin Media drive to improve the coverage and speed of its network, with over 13 million homes planned to be reached by its 100Mbit service by mid- 2012. At £45 a month without a Virgin Media phone line, or £35 with one, it's certainly not a cheap option, but those in need of such fast download (and upload) speeds have little alternative, except expensive business fibre optic broadband.
Virgin Media's Executive Director of broadband, Jon James, had this to say: "As data consumption rises and consumers grow increasingly reliant on their broadband service, only Virgin Media's unique network is primed to cater for the UK's impending data explosion. With four million homes now able to ‘get in the fast lane' with our 100Mb service, the UK is racing up the broadband league tables and we're delighted to be playing the leading role in boosting the UK's digital infrastructure."
Virgin Media isn't stopping at 100Mbit; the company also has a 200Mbit trial in place and in East London is testing out 1.5Gbit fibre - we can only hope the rest of the Internet is ready for such high-speed connections when they become widespread.
