Conclusion

...strong all-round performance, huge storage potential and 4K transcoding with popular third-party services such as Plex.

The Synology DS1019+ is an incremental upgrade over the existing DS918+. Offering an extra storage bay and more memory, up from 4GB to 8GB, the new unit is by no means ground-breaking but continues to serve as a powerful solution for those in the market for a high-capacity NAS.

Employing a familiar quad-core Intel Celeron processor, dual Gigabit Ethernet and eSATA for simplified storage expansion, DS1019+ delivers all of the NAS essentials, including strong all-round performance, huge storage potential and 4K transcoding with popular third-party services such as Plex.

Synology has played it safe in terms of hardware, yet while we'd liked to have seen PCIe expansion to help ease the transition to faster networking standards, the robust DiskStation Manager operating system continues to make this one of the more appealing five-bay units out there.

The big question for anyone eyeing up a Synology NAS is whether or not it's worth paying the Ā£100 premium for an extra bay and more memory. That depends entirely on how much storage you really need, but we come away feeling as though it's worth keeping an eye on the DS918+ in any upcoming sales.

The Good

The Bad
Excellent DSM operating system
Dual M.2 slots for easy SSD caching
Media transcoding with third-party apps
Simple expansion via optional DX517
Three-year warranty

Lacks PCIe expansion
Still only USB Type-A
Not the quietest

You'd expect a box at that price price to include 10GbE, or at least the option to add it later.

The review hit it on the head though - you can build a NAS box from scratch using one of the many *nix distributions and it will work very well.

But you need a degree of *nix expertise to get it working as you want, and it takes a degree od administration to keep the software up to date.

The big plus with the Synology is the customised operating system which allows pretty much anyone without *nix experience to get it set up and running quickly.

And that is what you are paying for - the convenience and ease of use of the OS.
Sorry after using Synology and moving to QNAP, the QNAP is MUCH MUCH better for usability, features and industry-wide support. QTS is leaps ahead of DSM.

I found exactly the same, much prefer my QNAP.
