Conclusion

Cramming a quad-core Intel processor and Nvidia's fastest mobile GPU into a chassis that's less than 23mm thick is no small feat...

The P37X is Gigabyte's most ambitious gaming laptop to date. Cramming a quad-core Intel processor and Nvidia's fastest mobile GPU into a chassis that's less than 23mm thick is no small feat, yet Gigabyte has still found room for 16GB of memory, two SSDs, a hard disk and an optical drive.

An impressive array of hardware for a thin gaming laptop, but inevitable compromises have been made. Struggling to cope with the TDP requirements of the underlying processors, the P37X becomes hot during use, resulting in throttled performance in certain scenarios and a level of fan noise that some users will be unwilling to accept.

And the low-resolution 1080p screen takes some of the lustre from the overall experience though this isn't Gigabyte's fault per se. Panel manufacturers are yet to churn out 17.3in screens with the preferred 2,560x1,440 resolution primed for the potent GTX 980M graphics; we're likely to see them arrive later on this year.

We aren't yet at the stage where high-end gaming hardware can be optimally squeezed into a thin-and-light package, and despite Gigabyte's best efforts, the same caveats still remain. Want desktop-like performance and high-end gaming potential in a thin and svelte laptop? The P37X fits the bill, but be prepared to put up with the noise.

The Good

The Bad
GeForce GTX 980M graphics
Quad-core Core i7 processor
Wide viewing angles
Sleek for a gaming laptop
Good range of I/O ports

Fan can become vocal
mSATA instead of M.2

Nice to look at, not a fan of the disco ball laptop, shame about price and noise though
I have the P34w with 970m, the fans do ramp up quite a bit. There are 4 fan modes from the latest Gigabyte smart manager, stealth, auto-low, auto-high and max fan. I run mine on auto-low; it still makes a bit of noise, but you cannot hear if you're wearing headphones. Also stealth mode does throttle the processors and graphics card down too, but it's pretty much silent. Have been playing Pillars of Eternity on that mode with no problem (its not too demanding I know), only noticed a bit of slow down in one of the main towns.

Pretty much the compromise you have to make if you want something so slim (and it is).

Yup…i think they need to remove the annoying fan noise from mSATA
