Overclocking the Barts duo

We've benchmarked the Radeon HD 6800-series cards at their shipping frequencies thus far. Changing gears by focussing on overclocking, here's how both the Sapphire and HIS card pan out.

First off, the Sapphire HD 6850 overclocks from a default 775MHz/4,000MHz to 900/4,300MHz. GPU voltage is increased from 1.149V to 1.193V.

Similarly, the HIS Radeon HD 6870's speed increases from 900MHz/4,200MHz to 970/4,700MHz. Voltage is increased from 1.179V to 1.2V.

Providing a glimpse into the potential of partner-overclocked cards, we re-ran the Aliens vs. Predator and Just Cause 2 benchmarks at a GPU-bustin' 2,560x1,600.

Both cards' performance increases by around 10 per cent, enough to make the HD 6870 competitive with the Radeon HD 5870, and the HD 6850 good enough to challenge the vanilla HD 5850.
