All things going well, firing up the system brings the external unit's LED display into life. Remember that a serial hook-up connects the interface card to the Exos-Al unit, and the interface card has a small temperature probe that connects up to the block, so the reading you'll see on the display is the block's and not CPU's temperature.

The unit has three preset fan modes. Mode 1, as you can see, operates the system at 45% of maximum power until the reported temperature hits 51C. Then it's a straight shift to 100%. Mode 2, on the other hand, gradually increases fan speed from 36C through to 51c, and Mode 3 simply keeps the system running at 100% at all times. In terms of sound, Mode 1 is quiet enough not to be obtrusive; it's just a gentle hum. Mode 2 is dependant upon temperature, obviously, but Mode 3 was annoying.

Toggling modes is as simple as pressing the button the required number of times. The yellow LED denotes Mode 3 status.
