Accessories and installation

Mounting brackets, thermal paste, 4 installation screws, and 2 standoffs for the Athlon64 are included in the accessory package. The interesting accessory is the Fan Mate 1 shown bottom-left.

The Fan Mate 1 acts as a rheostat. You have the option of plugging in the 7000-Cu's 3-pin fan wire into one side and the Fan Mate's header into the motherboard. The small knob, shown above, allows you to adjust the fan's speed from 11v - 5v. The knob's a little small for my liking. The 7000-Cu's fan does appear to run a little faster when not connected to the Fan Mate 1, that's because the minimum resistance of the rheostat gives you a maximum of 11v. The Fan Mate allows you to toggle the fan's speed from ~ 1300RPM to ~ 2300RPM.

Installation

Installation was a cinch. The two brackets slide into the holes on a standard S478 retention bracket.

The 7000-Cu sits on top and is screwed into the brackets. The easiest way to do this is to insert the screws beforehand and then place the cooler on the CPU.

Voila. Far easier than an Alpha 8942 installation. The physical dimensions of the 7000-Cu are best highlighted pictorially.

The Zalman sits high enough to avoid making contact with the Asus' Northbridge heatsink. Clever design all around.
