Is that enough for ya?

We may not have 3TB desktop hard-drives yet, but hopefully we're getting one step closer. Having already installed its hugely capacious drives into the consumer-friendly FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, Seagate is now offering them to business clients in its BlackArmor networked storage drives.

The updated BlackArmor NAS 440 is a four-bay device that is available in 4TB, 8TB and now 12TB capacities, making it one of the densest storage solutions available. Each model will come populated with four drives in a RAID 5 array and will include ten backup-software licences.

A smaller two-bay option - the NAS 220 - is also available, in 2TB, 4TB and 6TB capacities. This box is set up in a RAID 1 array and ships with five backup-software licences.

Other than oodles of storage, both models come with a host of features geared towards the small office environment. The devices support Microsoft Active Directory 2000, 2003 and 2008, hardware-based encryption, FTP access, and a USB port to connect additional storage, a printer or a UPS. They'll also ship with the manufacturer's own SafetyDrill+ backup software, which is capable of backing up and restoring multiple PCs.

As for the hardware, it looks to be the same as the older models in the series. Hopefully they will be sufficiently well cooled, as reviews of the 3TB FreeAgent drives suggested that they could get pretty warm under load.

The 12TB BlackArmor NAS 440 is available now from Seagate's partners for £1185.56, while the 6TB NAS 220 is available for £440.61.

Wouldn't say it ups the Ante that much, on a price per GB scale it's only OK… a Thecus N7700+ 7 bay and 7x 2TB Seagate hard drives from Scan gives 14TB for around the same money… So it's over more drives? Well good, less wasteful of space. RAID 5 in the Thecus gives me 12TB of space, whilst in the BlackArmour has dropped me down to 9GB.

True enough, but physical space and power-usage would probably be significantly lower.

It's also the only 4-drive solution offering that much storage. So the ante is upped for a 4-bay NAS.

I stand by the statement :p

Hmmm maybe, the Thecus units are not too bad on power, and the 2TB drives I looked at have less platters (and are “green” 5900rpm drives)… those 3GB units run hot as mentioned, so must draw a fair bit of power.
