California's OCZ Technology Group has today rolled out its Summit Series SSDs, a solution it claims is "tailored to meet the stringent demands of business professionals, enthusiasts, and entry-level enterprise applications."

The flash-based 2.5in drives, available in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities, feature 128MB of onboard cache - that's double the amount available on OCZ's existing Vertex series.

The larger cache, coupled with so-called "premium flash" memory, has raised the read and write speeds of the 120GB and 250GB drives to 220MB/s and 200MB/s, respectively. That just so happens to be identical - on paper, at least - to the numbers quoted by Corsair's 256GB P256 - an SSD that also happens to feature a 128MB cache.

OCZ hasn't named its choice of controller, but the figures suggest super-quick performance. Readers who're impressed by Corsair's drive but unable - or, unwilling - to put up the cash, might be eyeing up OCZ's smaller - and presumably cheaper - 60GB and 120GB models instead.

Not a bad theory, but OCZ hasn't yet provided pricing, and the smallest 60GB Summit Drive isn't able to match the larger alternatives in terms of performance, either. It'll still achieve read speeds of up to 220MB/s, but its write speed will fall to 125MB/s.

/me waits for someone to mention raid

Damn.. it was me :P
have to wait and see how these fare against a vertex drive. I have a real tough time trusting any new SSD's at the moment thanks to Anand's recent SSD round ups, though theoretically it ticks all the right boxes and coming from OCZ just reinforces this.
