There has been no love loss between Intel and NVIDIA this past week, and the latter now claims it's well on the way to developing a variant of its ION platform that'll support VIA's Nano processor.

Speaking to Chinese-newspaper Digitimes, NVIDIA president Jen-Hsun Huang has stated that the Nano-supporting ION platform is already in development and on course for a 2009 launch.

The proposed platform's finer details remain unknown, but a combination of VIA's low-power 64-bit processors and NVIDIA's GeForce 9400-based chipset could prove to be a potent combination that may challenge Intel's dominant Atom.

NVIDIA is no stranger to working closely with VIA, and was quick to show its support for Nano processors back at COMPUTEX 2008. The ION platform could, just could, be VIA's only means to making inroads against Intel's Atom in the ultra-portable space.

*Update*

NVIDIA has provided an official response to the story and states:

NVIDIA's goal is to give the consumer choice to pair an ION GPU with their preferred CPU.  In this vein, ION will support multiple CPUs including Intel Atom and VIA Nano.

Samsung NC20 Mk.2? I can see that working VERY nicely…
Do VIA really want that any more than Intel… Surely VIA would like to sell the bundled chipset as well?
Maybe they'd like to, but Via's market penetration in the x86 processor space is woefully small. Anything that helps Nano gain some traction is a win.
Glad to see some competition out there for the Atom.

Plus I'd *guess* that Ion-Nano will cost more than an all-Via solution, giving Via 2 potential markets.

Isn't Intel planning to launch it's own discreet GPU at some point? I wonder if they're planning on having a wider range of integrated graphics cores with different performance levels, and if that's got anything to do with this spat with NVidia? I could easily see them launching a budget range of boards with GMA and a mid-range of boards with an integrated Larrabee-based GPU…
